How to wash a down jacket?

The down jacket is a must for many during the winter season, and it may occasionally need a proper wash. It's important to remember that washing will tear on the jacket, so you should only wash it when absolutely necessary. If you've only got a stain on your jacket, you can try spot cleaning the stain first. If you think machine washing is necessary, we've created this guide with tips and tricks for washing and drying your down jacket with us. Remember to check the wash label carefully before washing the garment in the machine. Some garments cannot withstand machine washing or tumble drying, and must be sent for dry cleaning. You wash your clothes at your own risk in our machines, and it's up to you to check how your particular jacket should be washed or dried.

Remember to check the washing label on your jacket before washing it in the washing machine. Some garments cannot withstand machine washing and must be sent for dry cleaning. We recommend that you wash the jacket on a gentle program as indicated on the washing label, and at a maximum of 40 degrees. At Clean Kokos, we recommend using either the "Delicate" or "Down" washing program. If you are washing a thick down jacket, we recommend washing it alone, while you can wash several light down jackets together in the machine. Before putting the jacket in the machine, remember to close all zippers, velcro, and turn the jacket inside out. If your jacket has fur collars, these must also be removed.

It's important to pre-treat stains and dirty areas before you wash your jacket in the machine. Especially the collar and sleeves are particularly prone to stains. Try to clean dirty areas with a cloth and stain remover before washing the jacket in the machine. Sometimes it might be enough to spot clean stains and dirty areas, so you can save machine washing your jacket until it's really needed.

Down and feathers clump together when they get wet, so you should start the drying process as soon as the jacket is finished washing. If it stays wet for too long, the down can also start to smell. We recommend drying the jacket in the tumble dryer, on the "Delicate" or "Time Drying hot" program. If you're drying a single light down jacket, you should choose the "Time Drying hot" program, this is because the jacket will be too light for the machine to register it using the other drying programs. Include two to four drying balls to fluff up the down. The drying balls also ensure that the down does not clump together, or become compact and hard.
